Vaccines Do Not Cause Autism

Amazing how the assertion that vaccines cause autism has seeped in. I can hardly mention vaccines to people without them saying that they heard that if you vaccinate you kids, they will be autistic. This lie has done much to endanger public health. I hope it is finally being put to an end.

Financial Times: Lancet retracts MMR link to autism

The research paper that triggered claims linking autism to the vaccine for measles, mumps and rubella was yesterday formally retracted by the Lancet, the medical journal that published it more than a decade ago.

Following a ruling last week by the General Medical Council that Dr Andrew Wakefield had breached his professional duties, the Lancet said in a statement on its website that he had made false claims in his 1998 paper and concluded: “We fully retract this paper from the published record.”

Yes, Dr Andrew Wakefield’s MMR-autism theory was dishonest, but he’s not the only one to blame for the great vaccine scare of the past 12 years.

The impact of the campaign against MMR cannot be reduced to the activities of one man, or even to the three men brought before the GMC: a wider failure of medical quality control and public scrutiny allowed junk science to have an adverse effect on children’s welfare and public health.
